It is believed that nearly 65% of churches have no pastoral succession plan in place. This is unwise. After all, the truth is that churches will have their senior pastor leave either by way of (1) retirement, (2) resignation, (3) another assignment, (4) physical incapacitation, (5) when a church no longer wants that pastor to lead the church (voting out), or (6) untimely death. It is imperative that the church have a viable plan in place.
I will propose five questions for pastors, leaders, and the congregation to give careful, thoughtful consideration to concerning pastoral succession. I will also provide the two reasons you would normally need a succession plan.
In this session, I will give the elements of the succession plan committee, define succession, discuss pastoral responsibilities, and the give the four reasons why a succession plan is essential.
In this final session, I will give the six essentials of a pastoral succession plan.
